The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

Happy Tuesday everyone it's not Tuesday,

I had fun sharing my last presentation so I thought I would share another and since it's on a book I read this month it works as a book review.

This is what I wore for my presentation. Yes, I took these pictures in a bathroom at my school.

Susan Eloise Hinton wrote under the name S. E. Hinton so that her readers would assume she was male. She didn't think her readers would respond well to a female writing from a male's perspective. She was born in Oklahoma in 1948. She started writing The Outsiders when she was 15 making the year 1963 which is around when the book takes place. The book was inspired by her actual high school and the gangs that ruled it.

To give some context, the book is all about the greasers vs the Socials which is a lot like the Greasers vs the jocks (I put jocks because when Danny tries to switch sides he plays sports) from the movie Grease and the Drapes vs Squares from the movie Cry Baby.

Here's a corny joke for you. Why do people say be there or be square? Because you're not aROUND.

This is a picture from the movie version of The Outsiders done in 1983. The group consists of Ponyboy, the main character and his brothers, Darry and Sodapop as well as friends, Two-Bit, Dally and Steve.

The theme of The Outsider is otherness or othering. This is societies 'us' vs 'them' mentality where the 'us' group feels superior over the 'them' group because of some sort of difference. Whether that difference is real or imagined and whether or not that difference actually makes one party better than the other is irrelevant.

Some examples of reasons to other someone are class, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexuality just to name a few. Some life examples of otherness are Caucasian vs African American, Caucasian vs Mexican, and Caucasian vs anyone else because white people suck and I say that as a white person, as well as men vs women, cisgender vs transgender, heterosexual vs homosexual, etc.

A wondering is something we do in class. It's basically a ten minute writing prompt.

Totally Ky

P.S. I was going to post my essay as well but it refuses to format.
