May Book Review (8)

Happy Tuesday everyone it's not Tuesday,

1.) Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne

All of my stuff when I was a baby was Winnie The Pooh themed so I've literally loved him forever. It's been on my reading list for a while so when I found these beautiful copies of the books I had to get them. The writing style was not my favorite and I didn't like how Pooh was treated as a moron by the other characters and Eeyore was often unappreciated which made him a big attention seeker. Reading it I could really see the theory that every character has a mental illness (Right). But I loved the nostalgia and getting to know the characters and their origin stories. It was very sweet.

2.) Please don't go before I get better by Madisen Kuhn

I loved this book; it is so beautifully written with gorgeous drawings and the cover is one of my all-time favorite poetry book covers. Madisen has such a beautiful aesthetic that you can see in her books, blog, and Instagram. The writing reminds me of The princess saves herself in this one in the way that you feel like you're really getting to know the author personally, almost like she's telling her story through poetry. She shares some really vulnerable things about her. And she's only 22 years old with two published books under her belt! I find her so inspiring.

3.) Midnight Sun by Trish Cook

I'm in the always-read-the-book-before-the-movie-party so when I saw the commercial for the movie and later saw that it was a book, I picked it up. And read it in two sittings that would have been one if I hadn't had stuff to do. It's a really good read. Yes, I cried. It got me. It's about a girl who is basically allergic to the sun. And there's a boy. The ending is sad but written well so it doesn't leave you completely broken.

Books I read this school semester

I forgot to review these as I read them and  I'm returning most of them soon so here we go.

English 208 Intro to Lit is my favorite English class so far because we got to read really different books for an English class (5-8).

4.) I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly + Jim Ken Niimura

Graphic novels may not really be my thing but it was still really cool to read not one but two in an English class. I thought the storyline was sweet and it was cute how the main character wore animal ears but I'm afraid I'm simply not compatible with graphic novels so I don't have a full appreciation of it. I think I would have liked it a lot more of it were a novel. I will be seeing the movie that was recently made based on this book when it comes out so we'll see how that medium goes.

5.) Batman The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland

Again a graphic novel that I can't fully appreciate. I'm also not a big comics fan or superhero fan so I feel like I was missing a lot of understanding when it came to the story and the characters. I did see Lego Batman because it was really funny but that's about as far as my Batman and Joker knowledge goes. I will be giving this book to a friend who loves all of this stuff so it will be going to a better home that will properly appreciate it.

6.) The Odyssey of Homer

I love, love, love Greek mythology! Ever since the sixth grade when I had a teacher who also loved Greek mythology and taught a big unit on it I have adored Greek mythology. I had a great time getting to this unit in my college class because I was really able to shine with all of my past knowledge on the subject. I read The Odyssey a couple times before so it gave me even more of a leg up. Plus actually enjoying the book you're reading for the class makes all of the work you will be doing with it much easier. That's why I loved this class because the books were actually one I could enjoy.

7.) Revenge Of The Mooncake Vixen by Marilyn Chin

One of the characters was gay so you know I loved this book! There was a lot of swearing and sex so at first I was very thrown off reading a book like that for a class but eventually, I found it really fun. It's not something I think I would read again so I'm not keeping it but I enjoyed reading it and analyzing it for class.

English 211 American Literature (9)

8.) Tracks by Louise Erdich

This is the typical book you read in an English class which is why it was in English 211 and not English 208. It wasn't a horrible read but it wasn't really my thing. I'm not very into the historical genre but I did find it interesting to read about Native Americans. This book will be going to my Grandma who has a deep love for the Native American culture.
