June? June. Yeah it's June. Book Review (5)

Happy Tuesday everyone it's not Tuesday,

The Sky is Everywhere - Jandy Nelson

I bought this book because I read, "I'll give you the sun" by the same author and it was so amazing and beautiful. I didn't love this book as much as the other. I have mixed feelings with it. I love Nelson's writing style as it is very poetic and beautiful and I like aspects of the story such as how the main character is a poet and she hides poems all over her town. I wasn't really pleased by the book as a whole though. The main plot is how this high school girl and her family mourn the sudden death of her sister. So it was very emotional and sad which I don't usually like in a book because I am very influenced by books and writing. If a book is depressing it will make me feel depressed. Which is why I never read "Thirteen Reasons why" and "If I Stay" when they became very popular in the YA world. I knew they would put me in a mentally bad place. So I don't know if I will read this again. It's hard to say though because there were aspects I like but I want them in a different story maybe.

The Book Jumper - Mechthild Glaser

I also have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the concept of being able to jump into any book
world but I didn't like any of the characters outside of the books they were jumping into. And I didn't like the concept of the book besides the book jumping. I wasn't interested in the settings or how the conflict was carried out. It was a bit disappointing. As a lover of books I was really hopeful for this one to be good. Books about books are usually awesome. This one fell far below the bar. I didn't really like the writing style either but that may be because it was written in German first and then translated. I did really like the ending however. The resolution concept was awesome and it included one of my favorite books. Again I think it could have been done a little better. It was really fast and then really slow and it only included two of the characters so you don't get a resolution for all the other characters.

Moby Dick - Herman Melville

I picked this up at the ninety-nine cent store because it was so
cheap and I actually really like it. The writing style was very comfortable as well as the book size. It was really thin and small so I could toss it into my bag easily. The font was really nice too. I don't know why I found things like the size of the book and the font nice but I did. I have another book like that. It fits in my pocket and I draw a lot of comfort from it in the same way you might find some books intimidating. The story line was nice too, again it felt comforting. It became a little gruesome at times when
it described what they did with the whale once they caught them. I really liked the main character and the friend he made. I was really surprise to find this book so easily enjoyable. I've never really liked classic books and Moby Dick is one of those books you always hear about so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as I did. Luckily it was a dollar or I probably never would have read it.

The Girl in the Blue Coat - Monica Hesse

I absolutely loved this book. It was amazing from beginning to end. I fell in love with the characters,
especially the main character right from the start, the concept and execution of the conflict was great, I really don't enjoy history as a topic but I found this particular book so fascinating. And there were so many twists and turns that you don't expect. My jaw drops at least three times. And you think you know what's going on but then there's another plot twist. I actually dropped my jaw several times. The whole thing was so awesome. It was probably my favorite book this month. I went through it fast too because I couldn't put it down. It's set in Holland in 1943. So Hitler and Nazis and all that. The main character, Hanneke (honestly the only thing I didn't like was her name) is involved in the black market as her little rebellion against Germany. She finds things, then one day she is given the task to find a person. A girl in a blue coat. (I love the title and the cover art by the way. That's what drew me to it in the bookstore.)

The Pearl - John Steinbeck

This book was under one hundred pages and the price on the back says eleven dollars! My Grandma bought it so it's fine. We were talking about books and she gave me this one. It was really good. I was surprised that the author could write something so complete in such a short amount of time. I  liked the writing style especially in the beginning. You get sucked into the lull of a morning and then the conflict starts so immediately that it was quite startling. A couple wake up on the floor of their hut and start to go about their day when a scorpion stings their baby. Read The Pear by John Steinbeck to see if they baby lives or not.

If you're wondering where these snazy pictures came from the credit for that goes to my best friend Ana G. also known as @anabanasphotography on instagram. She has a fancy camera and we love to do photoshoots together so this is a new thing that will be featured on my monthly book review.

And this is what we look like today.

Good night,
Totally Ky
